Beginning Your New Life in Prayer

Prayer is talking with God. Every Christian has the privilege of communicating directly with God. If we desire a vital and fulfilling Christian life, we need to learn to talk with God. Through prayer, we can appropriate all of God’s resources for us in Jesus Christ.

Any fulfilling relationship involves two-way communication. A look at the biographies of people recorded in the Bible already shows the importance of communication between God and His people. As long as these individuals listened to God, obeyed Him and prayed, their spiritual lives were radiant. When these same people, however, failed to hear and obey God and talk with Him through prayer, spiritual problems crowded in.

The same thing can happen to us today. God communicates with us through His Word, the Bible. If we desire a rich and fulfilling Christian life, we also need to learn to talk with God. To pray is simply to converse or talk with Him.

Prayer was an important emphasis in the life of Jesus Christ. His desire to seek His Father’s presence and know His will through prayer is apparent through His earthly life. The life of Christ was a living conversation with God the Father; prayer the backbone of Christ’s life and ministry. To become like Christ, we need to learn to pray.

Prayer includes the following elements: Worship and Praise, Thanksgiving, Confession, and Specific Requests.

The best way to learn how to pray is by praying. Take some time to study the following verses and apply immediately what you learn about prayer through these verses.

Worship and Praise

1. In Psalms 95:6, what are we told to?

2. According to Psalms 95:7, why should we worship God?

3. According to Psalms 135:3, why should we praise God?

God is worthy of our worship and praise. As His Children, we should praise Him for His love, mercy, patience, holiness and power.

Psalms 95:6-7
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
7 for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if only you would hear his voice

Psalm 135:3
Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;
sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant.

4. Read 1 Chronicles 29:11-12. What does this passage tell us about God’s character?

Take a few minutes right now, to worship and praise God. Tell Him how much you appreciate Him and why. Considering the character of God described in 1 Chronicles 29:11-12, tell God your thought about Him.

If you are studying this with a friend, pray together. Take turns talking aloud to God.

1 Chronicles 29:11-12
11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power
and the glory and the majesty and the splendor,
for everything in heaven and earth is yours.
Yours, Lord, is the kingdom;
you are exalted as head over all.
12 Wealth and honor come from you;
you are the ruler of all things.
In your hands are strength and power
to exalt and give strength to all.

Thank God In Everything

  1. Read Psalms 106:1. According to this verse, what should we do?

  2. Read 1 Thessalonians 5:18. According to this verse, for what should we thank God?

  3. Read Romans 8:28. According to this verse, why can we thank God for everything?

Take a few minutes right now and think about the many thing God has done in your life, for which you are thankful. Why not write it down?

Take a few more minutes and think about any unpleasant experience or circumstance in your life for which you have not yet thanked God. Again, you are encouraged to write down.

THANK GOD FOR THESE THINGS.

Psalms 106:1
Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.

1 Thessalonians 5:18
Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Confess Your Sins

  1. According to Psalms 66:18, what happens when we pray and when there is unconfessed sin in our lives?

  2. Read 1 John 1:9. What does God say He will do when we confess our sins?

Are you aware of anything in your life that is not pleasing to God? If so, admit your sin to God. Confess it to Him. Remember, when you confess, you:

a. Agree with God that what He has revealed to you as sin is sin.

b. Thank God for His forgiveness. You know you’re forgiven because of what Jesus did. He died on the cross for your sins.

c. Repent-decide not to do it anymore. Change your attitude and then your action.

Take a few minutes and ask God to show you anything in your life that has not been pleasing to Him. You may list down these things on a small piece of paper.

After writing them down, confess them to Him.

Now, claim the promise of 1 John 1:9 and write this verse across your list. Then, destroy your list. This shows that you believe God has forgiven you.

Psalms 66:18
If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Specific Requests

  1. According to James 4:2b, why are the needs of some Christians not met?

  2. According to Matthew 7:7, what does Jesus say will happen when we tell God our needs?

  3. According to 1 Timothy 2:1, for whom should we pray?

Take a few minutes and list your specific needs and requests. When your requests to God are specific, you will know when He has answered them, Keep your list. Watch and wait. Then thank God when He does answer your request.

James 4:2
You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God.

Matthew 7:7
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

1 Timothy 2:1
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people

Pray Regularly

Prayer can become enjoyable when you write your request everyday in your devotional notebook. This provides a permanent record of your requests. It is also exciting to review your request periodically and see the many ways God has answered and actively involved Himself in your life.
